Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919) was a German zoologist and naturalist who described and named thousands of new species and created many terms used today in biology. His work of over one hundred illustrations of animals and sea creatures, Kunstformen der Natur ("Art forms in Nature"), would go on to influence the Art Nouveau artistic movement.
The Hydra is a genus of freshwater organisms belonging to the phylum Cnidaria. The Hydra is characterized by its cylindrical body, tentacles, and mouth. It belongs to the group of cnidarians, which also includes jellyfish and corals. These simple, tubular animals are part of the class Hydrozoa.
